2013 MLS Player of the Week Round 1: Mike Magee (LA Galaxy)

No Landon Donovan or David Beckham, no problem. The Los Angeles Galaxy had veteran blue-collar star Mike Magee step into the spotlight on Opening Weekend of the 2013 campaign, netting three times in a 4-0 victory and earning MLS Player of the Week honors.

mikemageeScoring more than one goal for just the second time in his career, Magee started the scoring spree Sunday against the Chicago Fire in the 38th minute when he one-timed a volley off a deflected ball that was falling in the center of the area. He nearly had a second in the 55th minute on a break toward goal, but was denied by Sean Johnson.

A Galaxy breakaway in the 68th, however, led to his second when he received the ball after coming in as a trailer on the play. He notched his 10th career MLS goal in the 74th on another fantastic strike when he ran onto a bouncing ball running parallel to goal and chested it down for a one-timer that he volleyed across his body and to the far back corner of the net.

It is the second Player of the Week honor of Magee’s career. The first came in 2011 when he moved from midfield to goalkeeper after an injury and ejection to the first two netminders. He made four key saves to preserve a scoreless draw on the road against San Jose.

Magee received eight of the 25 votes of the 29 votes with Sporting Kansas City’s Graham Zusi the only other player that received multiple votes with two.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More details and membership information can be found at
