A week ago he was honored for having a hand in all four of New York’s goals in a 4-1 victory over Colorado. This week Thierry Henry was named MLS Player of the Week after playing a key role in all five in a 5-2 victory against the Montreal Impact, becoming the 12th man in league history to win the award in consecutive weeks.
The Frenchman twice rallied Red Bulls from behind against Montreal, heading in a Rafa Marquez cross in the 28th minute and just minutes into the second half delivering a perfect through ball to Dax McCarty in the box that resulted in a foul and subsequent Kenny Cooper conversion from the penalty spot in the 58th.
Henry then took complete control. Given a little time in the 56th minute, he spun and ripped a perfectly-place shot just past an outstretched Donovan Ricketts. In the 72nd minute he brilliantly flicked a hard, low cross from Jan Gunnar Solli onto the path of Mehdi Ballouchy in the box for an easy finish. He completed the hat-trick in the 89th minute when a Cooper shot stopped by Ricketts fell to him for an simple tally.
Henry is the second player in the club’s history to earn Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks. Clint Mathis received recognition in in 2000. His current teammate Cooper accomplished the feat in 2008 while playing for Dallas. The only player to accomplish the feat since then was Canadian Dwayne De Rosario, who was selected in last season.
The list of consecutive honorees has a distinct flavor to it. Only two other foreign players (outside US & Canada) have been named Player of the Week back-to-back. The previous foreigners were Andy Herron of Costa Rica and Jeff Cunningham of Jamaica, making Henry the first player from outside of CONCACAF to accomplish the feat.
Full List: Cobi Jones (LA, 1998, Weeks 2 & 3)… Jason Kreis (Dallas, 1999, Weeks 29 & 30)… Ante Razov (Chicago, 2000, Weeks 7 &8)… Clint Mathis (NY, 2000, Weeks 22 & 23)… Mark Chung (Colorado, 2002, Weeks 10 & 11)… Andy Herron (Chicago, 2004, Weeks 26 & 27)… Jeff Cunningham (RSL, 2006, Weeks 18 & 20*)… Eddie Johnson (KC, 2007, Weeks 8 & 9)… Landon Donovan (LA, 2008, Weeks 4 & 5)… Kenny Cooper (Dallas, 2008, Weeks 18 & 19)… Dwayne De Rosario (DC, 2011, Weeks 20 & 21)… * No selection for week between honors
DC United’s thumping of FC Dallas garnered plenty of votes, including two first-choice selections for Maicon Santos and a third for rookie teammate Nick De Leon. The pair were also a combined 13 second-choice selections.
The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at www.soccerreporters.com.

What They Had to Say:
Beau Dure (ESPNW/ESPN, Sports Myriad): “Henry had a role in five goals. His through ball to Dax McCarty led to a PK. His sublime flick to Mehdi Ballouchy led to the clinching goal. Then he just scored the other three. He’s simply a few steps above other MLS players at the moment.”
Frank Giase (Newark Star-Ledger): “Henry’s goals were superb, but his assist, a blind backheel to a streaking Mehdi Ballouchy, might have been his most impressive play of the night.”
Dan Girard (Toronto Star): “Scores three, sets up another. Enough said.”
Jonathan Tannenwald (Philly.com): “Any player who scores a hat trick in a given weekend is likely to win Player of the Week, but the style and flair with which Henry played on Saturday made him really stand out. That includes the backheel assist to Mehdi Ballouchy, which gave Henry a role in four of the Red Bulls’ five goals on the day.”
