2012 MLS Player of the Week Round 10: Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution)

It was only 10 weeks ago Lee Nguyen was waived by the Vancouver Whitecaps. On Saturday, he made them regret that decision with two goals and an assist in leading the New England Revolution to a 4-1 victory. The performance earned recognition from the NASR as MLS Player of the Week.

The Texas native came to Major League Soccer during the offseason after multiple seasons abroad in Europe and the Vietnamese first division, where he found success that continued to spur his inclusion with the US national team youth and senior programs in 2007. He left Indiana University after just one season, pursuing a professional career in 2006. He was picked up in the Waiver Draft by the Revolution after he was cut by the Whitecaps March 1.

The visitors took the initial advantage after five minutes courtesy of Eric Hassli, but Nguyen wasted no time, firing right back a minute later when he curled a deflected ball that fell right to him into the back of the net.

Saer Sene, whom Nguyen set up nicely, and Shalrie Joseph put the match in New England’s firm control before Nguyen capped the contest with a stunning shot that could be a candidate for MLS Goal of the Year in the 72nd minute.  Nguyen brought down a Chris Tierney throw-in 25 yards from goal with one touch and then launched a cracker off the bounce that seared over Joe Cannon and into the far upper corner.

The result gave New England its fourth win of the year, keeping the Revolution in the middle of the Eastern Conference at 4-6-0. The Revolution’s best offensive output of the year was, on the other side of the ledger, the worst margin of loss and most goals conceded thus far for the Whitecaps.

The honor ends New England’s drought as the club was the only team not to feature a Player of the Week in 2011 and last saw Kenny Mansally earn the award in Week 2 of 2010.

Nguyen received 10 of the 21 votes with New York’s Kenny Cooper, who tallied two game-winning goals for the Red Bulls getting five votes. Brad Davis received two First Choice votes for his winner at the BBVA Compass Stadium opening.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More details and membership information can be found at
