2012 MLS Player of the Month – March: Thierry Henry (NY Red Bulls)

One of the longest droughts in Major League Soccer comes to an end with Thierry Henry being honored by the North American Soccer Reporters as the MLS Player of the Month for March. The award is the first for a New York Red Bulls player since June of 2007.

The striker has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2012 MLS campaign, notching a league-high five goals in the month of March. Henry has officially had a hand in eight of New York’s MLS-high 10 goals and is currently second in MLS in assists with three.  In addition, he played the pass that led to Dax McCarty earning a penalty kick Kenny Cooper converted against Montreal on March 31, and he was key in the build-up that sprang the opportunity on the final goal of the match against Colorado on March 25.

Henry played a key role in New York’s opening win of the season, a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on March 25 at Red Bull Arena, recording two goals and one assist en route to being named the MLS Player of the Week.

The Frenchman and 2011 MLS Best XI selection topped that performance six days later with a hat trick and an assist in the Red Bulls 5-2 romp over the Montreal Impact on March 31. Henry became the first New York player in over five years to record three goals in one match. He also was the first Red Bull to secure two-straight multi-goal games since Jozy Altidore in August 2007.

Henry became the fourth Red Bulls player to receive Player of the Month honors, joining an elite group with an all-time total of eight selections for New York. Preceding Henry were Clint Mathis (3 times), Amado Guevara (2) and Juan Pablo Angel (2).

The honor ends New York’s run as the club with the third-longest Player of the Month drought in the league. The only clubs that have gone longer without a player receiving the honor are the New England Revolution and Chivas USA. The last Revolution player to be honored was Taylor Twellman in September of 2005 while Jonathan Bornstein’s recognition in July of 2006 remains the only time a player from Chivas USA has been selected.

Henry received an overwhelming majority of the 25 votes cast with Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon receiving three votes and San Jose striker Chris Wondolowski getting two. Darlington Nagbe (Portland), Graham Zusi (Kansas City) and Jon Busch (San Jose) each received one first-choice selection.

Sixteen players made up the first list of nominees for 2012 with two players being up for the honor each from the New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers, Sporting Kansas City and Vancouver Whitecaps. The list was comprised of the month’s Players of the Week honorees as well as players nominated via NASR voters and the MLS clubs.
