Kurt Austin of Sporting KC explained why the club nominated him:

“After starting one match in April and two matches in May, Zusi broke out in June as he led Sporting Kansas City to a 3-0-2 record in five starts this month. The third-year pro recorded two goals and three game-winning assists and was a key contributor in the team’s three shutouts over the stretch.

Zusi recorded his first career multi-goal game on June 12th in a 4-1 win at FC Dallas, scoring twice and providing the game-winning assist in the upset and garnering an MLS Goal of the Week nomination for his stunning free kick from 45 yards out. Zusi followed the five point-performance on the road with two more game-winning assists at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, first in Sporting Kansas City’s 1-0 victory over San Jose and most recently in the club’s 2-1 win over the Whitecaps FC.

The three game-winning assists this month moved him into second place on the MLS game-winning assist chart, one behind David Beckham, and Zusi boasts the League’s longest active streak for consecutive games with assists (3), one game shy of the longest run this season.”

One of the NASR voters, Shaun Schafer of Colorado Soccer Now added:

“Zusi has done a great job turning Kansas City into something more than cellar dwellers. Getting a home park seems to have invigorated his play and he has elevated the team.”

Columbus Crew’s Andres Mendoza came in second with three of the remaining eleven votes. Two Seattle Sounders, Mauro Rosales and Roger Levesque joined Vancouver Whitecaps’ Eric Hassli in third place.

Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson and RSL’s Nat Borchers also received first choice votes.

San Jose’s Steven Lenhart was the only other player to feature.
